Luxury and adventure don't have to be opposites. Just look at Geoff and Sarah's wedding day for inspiration!
When Sara and Geoff first started planning their wedding, they knew they wanted something different. They envisioned a day that was relaxing, free-spirited, and fun—a true reflection of their nine-year journey together. Their vision pointed away from a large, traditional wedding and toward something more intimate and grounded in their shared love for nature. This led them to plan a beautiful hiking elopement in the heart of the Catskills, creating a day that was as adventurous and heartfelt as their own love story.
For couples dreaming of a wedding that feels authentic and deeply personal, Sara and Geoff's celebration is a perfect source of inspiration. It showcases how you can center your day around what matters most to you. From a scenic morning hike to a heartfelt ceremony with mountain views, their elopement was a testament to crafting a wedding experience that is both meaningful and unforgettable.
A Day Centered on Connection and Nature
Sara and Geoff’s priority was to create a day focused on each other and their closest loved ones. With a small guest list of 18 people, the atmosphere was relaxed and full of personal touches. They wanted to strip away the pressures of a large event and simply enjoy the moment. Their values were clear: more intimacy, less stress, and more fun.
This philosophy guided every decision they made. Instead of a large venue, they chose a cozy house in the Catskills as their home base. The morning began not with a frantic rush, but with Sara getting ready with her friend, and guests enjoying breakfast together. The plan was to be present, to soak in every moment, and to celebrate their union in a way that felt completely natural to them. This intentional approach is what makes an elopement so powerful—it gives you the freedom to design a day that truly mirrors your relationship.
Finding the Perfect Spot to Elope in the Catskills
One of the biggest questions for any couple planning an elopement is, "Where do we go?" Sara and Geoff knew they wanted fall colors, mountain views, and perhaps a water element. They were open-minded but needed guidance to find a location that brought their vision to life. That’s where we at Outdoor Chronicles Photography came in. Helping couples find epic and meaningful locations is a huge part of what we do.
After learning about their love for hiking and their desire for stunning scenery, we worked together to pinpoint the perfect trail in the northern Catskills area. The location offered everything they dreamed of: a rewarding hike, breathtaking cliffside views, and the vibrant autumn foliage of the Catskills. It provided a dramatic and beautiful backdrop for their vows without feeling overwhelming.
The Adventure of a Hiking Wedding
The wedding day timeline was built around the adventure. The group set off in the morning, embarking on a hike to the ceremony spot. Sara and Geoff planned to wear their hiking gear for the trek up and change into their wedding attire at the top. This practical approach allowed them to fully embrace the journey.
Their ceremony was short, sweet, and incredibly special. Standing on a cliff overlooking the vast landscape, they exchanged vows surrounded by their family and friends. It was a powerful moment, made even more so by the stunning natural setting. Following the ceremony, they shared a sparkling beverage toast with their guests before we moved into capturing portraits.
As their photographers, our goal was to capture the day as it unfolded naturally. While we coordinated the essential group photos they requested—with parents, siblings, and the whole group—the majority of the day was documented through a candid lens. We focused on the small, in-between moments: the laughter on the trail, the quiet glances between the couple, and the shared joy of their guests. This photojournalistic style allows the real emotion and story of the day to shine through, creating a gallery of images that feel alive and authentic.
